The best 85-inch TVs for 2024 have HDMI 2.1 ports, UHD screens, and HDR support.

There’s more to the best 85-inch TVs than just their size. They also have some of the best TV technology, which makes your home theatre experience more authentic. You’ll need a lot of space and money to buy one.

There are some of the best 85-inch TVs that we’ve tried over the years. We know what features, like motion processing and improved detail, will make each pixel look its best. You’ll also need an excellent HDR to ensure the shots are bright.

You should think about the best 8K TVs before you buy a TV this big. 8K TVs look great at this size because they are four times clearer than the best 4K TVs. Also, 4K looks excellent, and these TVs’ picture systems make sure it looks great, so there’s no need for it. Still, it’s pretty cool.

TVs that are 85 inches are significant, but they’re less thinner than TVs that are 65 inches. They only have a little room for a good sound system like other small TVs. Even though they did everything they could to break the rules of physics, You can only get a good sound from these TVs if you also get one of the best soundbars.

We used to tell you there are better places to get a cheap TV. But many new models are surprisingly affordable for how big their screens are. Some screens are in the price band.

REASONS TO BUY
High-quality 8K upscaling+Excellent color detail
REASONS TO AVOIDLacks Dolby Vision HDR-Slight backlight blooming

People may not have been very interested in 8K TVs in recent years, but Samsung is still fully committed to the technology. The QN900C is the company’s best 8K TV for 2023. It’s the best model yet because picture processing and upscaling have improved.

The picture on the QN900C stands out because of how bright it is and how well the colors are shown. The blacks are deep and the shadows are straightforward thanks to a mini-LED backlight with up to 2,000 local fading zones. Its AI-enhanced upscaling of 4K and regular HD content made its ability to show fine textures “on another level,” which we talked about in our QN900C review. On a big screen like an 85-inch one, where 8K quality can make a difference, that makes a big difference.

It’s not just the picture quality of the QN900C that makes it great for games. Virtual Reality, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, and Samsung’s Game Hub for cloud games are all built-in. All four of its HDMI 2.1 ports can handle 4K at 120Hz. The QN900C has “comfortably the best sound performance of any of Samsung’s 2023 TVs,” as our review put it, thanks to its Object Tracking Sound Pro system.

There are some problems with the QN900C, even though it has a lot of good points. Like other Samsung TVs, it doesn’t support Dolby Vision, and scenes with rough black-to-white changes show a minor backlight bleeding. Also, compared to the company’s other 4K mini-LED TVs, it costs a lot. However, if you want an 8K TV with a screen size of 85 inches, the Samsung QN900C is the best choice.

Smart TV: WebOS 23 interface

REASONS TO BUYImpressive gaming specs+Excellent all-around picture
REASONS TO AVOIDJust-average audio -Not as bright as top OLEDs

The new LG C2 TV has excellent picture quality thanks to many significant changes that have been made to it. We were excited about the C3 because the C2 was our TV of the year in 2022. It lived up to those dreams with a new intelligent interface, better HDR picture processing, and more gaming features. In 2023, it was one of the best TVs on the market.

The largest C3 is the 83-inch type, but there are also other sizes. The Alpha 9 Gen 6 chip for processing pictures is excellent at this size, and extras like OLED Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro and Expression Enhancer make it even better.. Another TV on this list is brighter and has better contrast, clarity, and sharpness. The brightness level was the same as the C2.

The webOS 23 smart TV interface is another significant change between the C3 and the one that came before it. . It looks better and is easier to use because features like Quick Cards group apps together. This type also comes with LG’s new and innovative magic remote.

The sound has also gotten better. Because it has the Wow Orchestra feature, users can use certain LG Dolby Atmos soundbars to boost the sound from the TV’s built-in speakers.

The C3 has a simple look, with a thin frame and an aluminum-faced center stand. With fewer 83-inch C2s in stock and changes to the C3 that make it a little better, it was clear that the C3 would be the best big screen for most people for the next few months.

THE BEST 85-INCH TV FOR THE MONEY

SPECIFICATIONSScreen size: 55, 65, 75 and 85-inches
Resolution: 4KPanel type: QLED with mini-LED
Smart TV: Google TV
HDR: Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HDR10, HLG
REASONS TO BUYImpressive brightness+Affordable for a mini-LED TV+’NextGen TV’ tuner
REASONS TO AVOIDSlight backlight blooming-Off-center picture fade-Pic settings not easily accessible

The Hisense 85U8K is our top pick for a low price. Almost all of Hisense’s TVs in 2023 were mini-LED TVs, and the U8K series was the best of the bunch. The mini-LED backlight in this set is very bright, and a full array of local dimming makes the blacks very deep and the contrast very strong. This TV is great for watching sports because it is colorful and has an anti-glare screen. The 85-inch screen will make the action even better.

The Hisense 85U8K also does great with games. The TV has two HDMI 2.1 ports that can handle 4K inputs at 144Hz and VRR, ALLM, and FreeSync Premium Pro. It also looks good and comes with adjustable-width support feet that can be set up to make room for a soundbar. It also has a built-in ATSC 3.0 tuner that works with US “NextGen TV” feeds.

The most exciting thing about the Hisense 85U8K is that it offers ultra-big screens at a very reasonable price. You can get this mini-LED TV for a lot less money, but it still has many of the same features and works just as well as more expensive ones. It has a bright and clear picture for movies, sports, or games with excellent results.

REASONS TO AVOIDPicture lacks contrast-No Dolby Vision HDR

Samsung’s 85CU8000 shows that getting a giant screen doesn’t have to cost much money. The cheap 85-inch model from Samsung costs £1,899 (about $1,699 in the US), which is a reasonable price for a screen this big.

The Samsung 85CU8000 has a standard LCD screen with an LED backlight that lights up the edges. Because of this, it doesn’t have as much brightness or color depth as models that are a step up, like the Samsung 85Q80C, ranked fifth in this guide. It also has a different picture. For example, shadows in dark movie scenes look more like an uneven dark gray than a deep, solid black. But the picture will be nuanced if you primarily use the 85CU8000 to watch sports, TV shows, and games in a bright room. Our review of the Samsung CU8000 said it “did handle screen reflections well, even with harsh overhead lights turned on in our testing environment.”

The 85CU8000’s Tizen smart TV interface is among the best on the market. It has all the famous streaming apps, including BBC iPlayer and ITVX, which are free to use. It also has Samsung’s gaming hub, which lets you play games in the cloud from services like Xbox and Nvidia GeForce Now. Other than that, the 85CU8000 offers little in the way of gaming support.

The 85CU8000 from Samsung is about getting the most screen space for the least amount of money. Even though that means a lower picture quality, casual viewers and players should be happy with how well this TV works and its features.

WHAT IS THE BEST 85-INCH TV IN THIS PRICE RANGE?

REASONS TO BUYExcellent HDR picture +Very good value
REASONS TO AVOIDLacks Dolby Vision HDR-Viewing angle is limited

The 85Q80C is Samsung’s best QLED TV for 2023. It’s also an excellent value for the money, with many game features and a clear, bright picture. It also comes with good sound and Samsung’s Tizen smart TV platform, which makes it an excellent choice for an 85-inch TV in this price range.

Between LEDs and cheap QLEDs, the 85Q80C is in the middle of Samsung’s 2023 TV line. It’s better than its mini-LEDs and OLEDs, though. But the picture of it makes you doubt that.. The picture has more black than we thought, and the image is better. It also has excellent sharpness and clarity in 4K. Samsung’s mid-range TV has some problems with backlight blooming and viewing angles that aren’t great, but it’s still a great deal.

The 85Q80C could handle 4K at 120Hz with its four 2.1 HDMI ports. It also had AMD FreeSync Premium, VRR, ALLM, and Samsung’s Gaming Hub. We gave it five stars for games in our study because the input lag is so low at 9.7ms.

The 85Q80C has some problems with the way it looks. Putting it next to Samsung’s more expensive and high-end mini-LED and OLED TVs doesn’t make it look as fancy. Besides that, the Q80C is an excellent TV that shows that TV makers can make mid-range models that are just as good.

REASONS TO BUYFantastic picture+Impressive brightness for OLED+Great gaming features and performance
REASONS TO AVOIDAverage sound quality-Doesn’t come with stand-Not as good value as Samsung S95C

We found the LG OLED 83G3 the best 85-inch TV for money. It looks great and is high-end. The 83G3 is more than just pretty,

though that is a big part of its story. Part of its draw is that it works well for gaming. All four 2.1 HDMI ports support 4K 120Hz, and the TV has Play games with Dolby Vision at 120Hz, VRR, and ALLM. For gamers, it has everything they could want.

Other LG G3 phones have Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology that the 83G3 doesn’t have.. However, it has the same panel as the G2, making it brighter than other OLED TVs, like the LG C3. It does have the same next-generation picture processor as other G3 sets, which makes colors look great, textures look great, and HDR contrast works excellent. Simply put, the 83G3 is the best TV in the world.

Also, the 83G3 is a beautiful TV to look at. It looks very classy when hung on a wall because of its smooth, bezel-free design. A desk stand is not included; you must pay extra if you don’t want to put it on the wall.

The price of LG’s G3 series TVs is high, though it has decreased since the line came out in March 2023. The LG C3 has an 83-inch OLED screen that is cheaper and of higher quality but less bright than the HTC G3.

WHO OWNS THE BEST 85-INCH TV FOR PS5?

The best 85-inch TV with smarts that work with PS5

REASONS TO BUYRich, detailed picture +Great match for PS5
REASONS TO AVOIDLimited HDMI 2.1 ports-Lacks HDR10+ support

For PS5 owners, the A80L is the best TV. Sony’s new Game Menu and support for 4K 120Hz, ALLM, and VRR are some of the latest game features. This makes people better than their peers.

It also works on the PS5 with Sony Auto HDR. This means the system changes the images and HDR settings to get the best HDR for any Sony TV it connects to.

The picture on the A80L is rich and clear, with nice colours and details. It’s an excellent TV for watching both movies and playing games. The colour is pretty good, even in the picture modes with the TV. There might be better TV than the world’s best TV.

The A80L also has a great music system that is better than many rivals. It’s even more accurate if a complete speaker system sends music through the screen. The sound fills the room with clear, powerful sound.

You should know that the A80L can handle Dolby Vision, but not at 4K 120Hz. This doesn’t affect people who own a PS5 since the PS5 doesn’t support Dolby Vision. But if you also own an Xbox Series X, think about it.

One of the main issues with the A80L is that it only works with two of its four HDMI ports for 4K 120Hz gaming. It was also designed for something other than bright rooms, which might make everyday gaming a little more complicated. However, the A80L is excellent for PS5 because it has functions that work with Sony gear. Keep in mind that people in the UK get the 83-inch Sony A84L instead. The only difference is the remote; a few other minor changes don’t generally affect how we feel about it.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST 85-INCH TV

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A 85-INCH TV

You expect the best for this size and price. In other words, you need to think about some essential things.

The first one has 8K. There needs to be more 8K content, especially for streaming, which costs much more than 4K. Many people say that 8K is better than 4K. If you want an 8K TV, read our reviews and consider how well it changes 4K material to 8K. The material you watch will be more 4K content upscaled to 8K than pure 8K.

Small LED QLED vs. OLED is the second thing to think about. Goodness and contrast-wise, the first one is very close to the second one and very bright. However, Samsung’s mini-LEDs are even more colorful and cost much less than most OLEDs. The C3 is more colorful than most OLEDs.

You can get Dolby Vision and have it. Waiting for a Samsung would help because it works better with HDR10+. It’s OK to watch movies on this since streaming and most devices support more than one HDR version. But if you play games, there might be other options because Dolby Vision is considered the best HDR format. If your TV doesn’t have Dolby Vision, HDR10 will be used instead.

Remember how to meet. It would help if you had eARC HDMI to connect to the best soundbars or AV speakers. You will also need more than one HDMI port to connect different things. This is the best because new game systems use HDMI 2.1.

Now, let’s talk about sound. There is a lot of excellent TV music, especially on the more expensive types. But science says you can’t do that. A thin TV only has so much room for speakers, and even Dolby Atmos doesn’t have more surround sound. You should also save money for a good speaker or AV music system if you don’t already have one. There is a considerable change.

AT CES 2024, WHAT NEW TVS CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO?

We got a good idea of what TVs will be like in 2024 at the CES 2024 trade show, the year’s biggest tech show.

2024 OLED TVs will be better, and some will be big. Hisense will release new 110-inch and 98-inch mini-LED TVs, with the first one having a peak brightness of 10,000 nits. TCL announced a 115-inch mini-LED TV with a peak brightness of 5,000 nits.

What’s the best news from CES 2024 about the kinds of big TVs we talk about in this guide? The future LG G4 will come in an 83-inch size and use LG’s microlens array (MLA) technology. It means the brightness will be much better, a tech improvement only offered on smaller LG G3 models before this one.

HOW FAR AWAY SHOULD YOU BE FROM AN 85-INCH TV?

Many people give different numbers, but as a general rule, it’s 1.5 to 2.5 times the flat screen size: A TV that’s 85 inches should be watched from about 10.5 to 15 feet (3.5 to 5 m) away. The picture should take up most of your screen space and not strain your eyes.

WHAT SIZE IS AN 85-INCH TV?

An 85-inch TV’s exact length, width, and depth will depend on the mode.l. An OLED screen doesn’t need a backlight, so a TV with one will be slightly bigger. If a TV has a speaker built-in, it may look more prominent and heavier. It’s possible to hide the TV’s screens by putting other screens around the box.

A typical 85-inch TV in this price range might be 109 cm tall, 190 cm wide, and 6 cm thick. Consider these sizes if you want to hang the screen on the wall. Putting the screen on a stand will make it even taller.

DO YOU NEED HELP PLACING AN 85-INCH TV?

An 85-inch TV can be mounted on the wall. But 85-inch TVs are big and heavy. An 85-inch TV should be able to hang on your wall.

When you have a big TV, the stand you use is more important than ever. Make sure you have good tools on hand to put it there. How heavy is the 85-inch TV you want to buy? After that, ensure the wall mount you want will fit it.

HOW WE CHECKED OUT THE BEST 85-INCH TVS

The way and standards we use to test the best 85-inch TVs are the same in our other TV buying guides and reviews. We test a TV by checking its screen quality, sound quality, game ability, etc.

After a few days of casual watching to get used to the TV, we’ll find the best picture preset, usually Movie or Filmmaker Mode. We’ll then watch Blu-rays and streaming videos in HD and 4K to test the TV’s picture quality. We often use reference scenes in our TV tests that we know very well.

Picture quality is essential to find the best 85-inch TVs because flaws will stand out more on a bigger screen. Black consistency is an important thing we test. This is because more giant TVs, especially edge-lit LCD models, can have dark spots and “cloudy” spots on the screen where the backlighting isn’t spread out evenly.

Color, contrast (again, significant on a big screen), motion processing, and how real and natural the textures and features look are some things we test for picture quality.

We will also see how well a TV’s upscaling works using lower-resolution sources like DVDs and public TV. Some of the best 85-inch TVs also come in 8K, and we’ll see how well an 8K model upscaling works with 4K sources.

Once we finish the subjective tests, we use a colorimeter, a test pattern generator, and Portrait Displays’ Calman calibration software to take objective readings and write down the results.

First, we’ll use white window designs to test the brightness. The two most important are 10% and 100%. 10% tells us what the TV’s peak brightness levels will be and how it will handle HDR highlights, and 100% shows us how well it can keep the brightness level steady across the whole screen (vital for watching sports) and how it will handle reflections.

We also test color gamut coverage and color and grayscale accuracy to see how accurately a TV shows colors and grayscales. Color gamut coverage tells us how many colors the TV can show.

These days, more TVs have gaming features to work with new devices like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. When we test TVs for games, we look for features like higher refresh rate support (120Hz/144Hz), VRR, ALLM, and how well the Game Mode works. We also use a Leo Bodnar 4K HDMI input lag tester to check for delay. A lower number means better performance.

For all of our reviews, it’s vital that our testing be as consistent as possible. However, different setups and testing settings are used by other writers. Still, we will ensure that all reviews use the same tests and, if possible, the same amount of testing equipment.
