Because the Virginia tech baseball bullpen pitching had reached the end of the line for the season, the Hokies’ best opportunity for extra postseason play was to win over BC and earn a matchup against Clemson. It didn’t happen. The Hokies were defeated in both matches. Thirty victories is a significant accomplishment for such a young quad. Upcoming Season! GO HOKIES!!!

The regular season of virginia tech baseball came to an end with few expectations.

This week marked the conclusion of the 2023 Virginia tech baseball season for the Virginia Tech Hokies, which was cut short by two defeats in Group C play of the ACC Tournament. The Hokies finish the year with 30 victories and 21 losses (plus two in the ACC Tournament). They held a record of 12-17 in the ACC and had a home record of 21-10. A group of relatively young baseball players gave a respectable performance even though their season was not particularly impressive.

This season of Virginia tech baseball, Coach Szefc had a strategy in mind. There was not much anticipation for a spectacular redo of the previous season’s fantastic conclusion this year. The greatest seniors on the squad were offered contracts by Major League Baseball, which decided to take them.

The terrible truth is that athletes rarely get drafted into the top leagues, where most of the money and the most prestigious competitions take place. In addition to a position in the lower companies, they are offered a signing bonus, which is often determined according to a scale. It would be an understatement to say that the pay for baseball players in the lowest categories of the sport is meagre. By reading this story from CBS Sports, you can understand how meagre the remuneration is, even for players in the highest professional baseball league. Large contracts costing several millions of dollars constitute more of a lottery gamble than a guaranteed opportunity, even though they are alluring.

If they want to keep good people in the school, someone will have to come up with some positive reward at some point. The players have to finish their degrees, so their part-time jobs when the season is over pay well. Most college baseball players are put on A teams, and it’s rare for them to move up to AA teams in their first few seasons. The idea that playing a game will make you rich immediately is untrue.

Now, a quick summary of the weekend (and the season of Virginia tech baseball)

Some people thought that Tech would beat Boston College and then go on to play Clemson for The Group C championship. But the game didn’t turn out the way they had hoped.

Jonah Hurney, an experienced reliever and closer for the Hokies, was the first thing that stood out. Usually, the first pitch in a game this important would be thrown by the starting pitcher, but it looks like it had to be thrown by a group. Then people started to worry about the end of the game. Pitch-by-committee works for midweek games against teams that aren’t as tough, like Boston College. Also, it was a “make-or-break” game. If the Hokies hung an “L,” their season would be over because they would have to play Clemson the next day. When things are like this, starting backups is never a good idea. This turned out to be true, and by the end of the game, the Hokies’ bullpen couldn’t keep the Eagles from scoring.

In the last three innings, a bright marking showed where Tech was having trouble in the bullpen. The saddest thing was that the attack was getting runs. Tech was ahead of the Eagles 6-4 when the bottom of the sixth inning started. It was strange that Coach Szefc didn’t put Anthony Arguelles forward of Hurney in the starting group, but we can discuss that later. Arguelles had been doing well as Griffin Green’s backup starting for most of the second half of the season. He had many successful innings and could pitch more innings than shorter substitutes. When he did get into the game, he did pretty well. In 2 and 1/3 innings, he gave up only one earned run.

But too much was in front of the rest of the pen. After giving up a solo home run in the sixth inning, which cut the Eagles’ lead to one run, Coach Szefc took Anthony out of the game. But more runs were scored against Henry Weycker, so another pitcher had to come in. The Eagles kept putting pressure on the Hokies, and even though they had two outs and the door was closing in their faces, they kept making mistakes. The attack scored one more run in the top of the seventh, but without relievers who could stop BC from scoring, it was too late to win. The Hokies lost the game 7–11, and their season was over.
